Frequently asked questions

Does X (Twitter) support bold or italic markup?

No. X strips HTML and ignores markdown. The trick is Unicode "math alphanumeric" code points — 𝗔𝗕𝗖 (bold), 𝘈𝘉𝘊 (italic) — which render natively in every X client without any special markup.

Do bold and italic letters count more towards the 280-character limit?

Each styled letter counts as one character — the same as a plain letter. So you can replace your text with bold variants without changing the tweet length.

Why don't screen readers read my fancy bold tweets correctly?

Many screen readers spell out Unicode math letters letter-by-letter, or skip them entirely. Use styled text for emphasis on a few words, not for the entire tweet — keep critical info in plain ASCII.
